Kallista not to be taken lightly at Washdyke tomorrow

By

DAVID McCARTHY

The talented Ashburton mare, Kallista, has thumbed her nose at convention more than once in her brief but impressive career and she could do it again in the Park Hill Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting at Washdyke tomorrow. Kallista is “second up” after a smart performance fresh in the Stewards Handicap, on her home track, late last month, when she comfortably beat Red Sovereign, No Techie and Courier Flight in her first start since last November. Many will consider that that one race, preceded by a trial, will not have her seasoned enough for 1600 m on a winter track, and while it is a credible assessment it could be dangerous to dismiss her winning hopes so lightly. Kallista has had only sixteen starts for her six wins. She seems best kept fresh and is unlikely to be asked for much more racing after tomorrow before the International Trucks Winter Cup, her major immediate target. The winner of three of her first five starts, Kallista notched her biggest victory to date in the Classique Cottages Canterbury Stakes over 1400 m on a heavy track at Riccarton last October. That day she beat Regal Visit and Kiss Me Kate with some smart mares further back and indicated she should not find good company at the metric mile too daunting a task. A winner at 1600 m on a firm track last season, she finds the distance near the edge of her stamina rating but Kallista can still be expected to go a good race today. The Riccarton gallopers Famillion and Gums a Calling should offer most resistance to the mare and Vendee, Bright Prelude and Red Sovereign must all be

considered in an open field. Famillion won well at Wingatui three starts back and then failed over 1400 m at Ashburton but returned to all but hold out Gallipoli in the Canterbury Handicap at Riccarton. He has an inside draw which is a major advantage over this distance at Timaru and which counts against the otherwise impeccably-credentialled Vendee. Red Sovereign has been hinting 1600 m is not beyond him while Bright Prelude has been performing consistently well in recent weeks. Another Winter Cup hopeful, Jonny Alone, will be trying to beat a “hoodoo” when he lines up in the second leg the Pyne, Gould Guiness Handicap. The brilliant Washdyke galloper has been sent out a warm favourite in the corresponding race for each of the last two years but minor placings have been his lot. Last year he found Natural Star and Danseuse Royale too strong while Orb and Our Secret Weapon beat him home the previous season. Jonny Alone may have lost some of his early brilliance but even allowing for this being his first outing since May his class must be considered when assessing the winning chances The Mean Machine, Catential, which should sprint well fresh, track specialist Natural Star, Ballajoy, which beat Peat, and other top sprinters under weight-for-age conditions over this distance on the course, as a three-year-old, and Kiss Me Kate all have some claims to win hopes while the consistent Beaufort Sea mare, Heidiby, could produce an upset. While probably at her best now over slightly more ground Heidiby should sprint well fresh in her first outing since May.

Not as seasoned as some but seems best on the fresh side. Top chance. 2 2123 Vendee 16 C. Crowe 57.0 Form hard to fault. Inconvenienced by heavy going at a crucial stage at Riccarton but still went a bold race. On anything better than a heavy track is a top chance though the draw is a problem. 3 1315 Bright Prelude 6 L. Didham 57.0 Consistent mare with the right draw to make an impression. Won this distance on soft track at Oamani on June 15 and fifth in the Ferrymead Handicap at Riccarton, over 1400m, won by The Mean Machine. One of the leading hopes. 4 3172 Famillion 1 G. Williams 55.0 Just beaten by a determined Gallipoli at Riccarton, over 1800m, and ideally suited by this distance. Respected. 5 1324 Count Claudio 4 54.5 Consistent galloper which rarely goes a bad race on his home track. Must be considered though since maiden win, at this distance, has looked better over more ground. 6 1586 Wentworth Heights 10. .A. Hunsche 54.5 Recent racing disappointing though tracks so far have not really suited. Best in loose footing and if he strikes it here could surprise. Good record at the distance. 7 3355 Flyer 15 53.0 Ran on stoutly over distance short of her best this track last Friday week. Is second up here though and badly treated by draw. Place chances preferred. , „ , J „ 8 4536 Gums a Calling 7 .... J. Woledge 53.0 In fine form in May finished unlucky fifth in the Nelson Cup followed by a good third to Blyme and Keen Pell in the Hawkins Handicap at Riccarton. Running on nicely in only outing since. Good record on the course and well placed at the distance. One of the hardest to beat. 9 3121 Napoleon Bonaparte 9. . K. Kenyon53.0 Impressive win this distance and course last start in first outing for some time. Talented but could be held in this company. 10 3244 Red Sovereign 13 . . . . G. Davison 53.0 Has looked well above average as a winter sprinter at times and recent form hints at early return to the winning list. Not yet tried beyond 1400m and has drawn wide but bold effort covering extra ground at Ricccarton last start. The boilover. 11 0558 Adioe King 2 J. Jamieson 52.5 Disappointing in holding ground at Kiccarton last time out but due to show improved form. Seems best at 1400m though place chance here. 12 0709 Hwyl 11 52.5 Looks beyond his best on the flat and only place chance would come in very heavy ground. . . e 13 8658 Kiwi Boy 8 R. McAra 52.5 Best form on firm and easy tracks though disappointing recently. Freshened since two moderate runs at Queen’s Birthday week-end and goes best in that condition. 14 7800 Puffasmoke 5 J. Cameron 52.5 Showed good form down in the grades on heavy going last winter. Has had two starts so far on present campaign and might need more racing yet. 15 2111 Walden Pond 12 J. Barr 52.5 Recent form indicates his class as a hurdler but no form on the flat in this company to suggest he has a chance. 16 7666 You Rang Sir 14 52.5 Out of his depth in this company. Didham 55.5 Weak effort over 1410m at Ashburton last month. Talented sprinter at best but set a difficult assignment from this draw. 3 Catehtial 1 54.0 Good stayer resuming. Likely to be outpaced early but still rates as an outside chance. 4 1211 The Mean Machine 4 . . A. Hunshe53.0 Stylish win, this course and distance, July 3. Yet to race on course but runs handy to pace and adds to form puzzle. 8 7034 Baliway 3 S. Cook 51.5 Has not raced since placing in weak company at Cromwell in March. Rough chance. 9 7073 Kias Me Kate 11 R. McAra51.5 Good third behind The Mean Machine on this course earlier in month.
