True Roman resumes

The grand Australian trotter, True Roman, made a successful resumption at Gawler (South Australia) last week, rating 2min 3.8 s in a 2170 m free-for-all. The son of True Duane, which created a favourable impression when campaigned at the Rowe Cup carnival in Auckland last year, was having his first race start since February. Former Auckland pacers, Ernie and Spectacular Bid, fought out the finish in a 2600 m event at Kilmore (Melbourne) last week.

Ernie, which races as Our Ernie in Australia, was having his first start across the Tasman. He was given a perfect run by Vin Knight, outfinishing the hot favourite, Spectacular Bid, which had raced without cover for most of the journey, by two metres. Spectacular Bid, a Smooth Fella four-year-old, was also successful in his first Australian start, finishing fourth in his only other outing before last week’s placing.
