Aust, higher at record levels

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher at record levels as ongoing local and offshore support for scattered blue chip stocks offset leftover profit taking. The market showed no response to the June balance of payments figures released in the morning and continued to focus on special interest stocks, particularly Bell Resources. Gold issues also attracted support following a small rise in bullion. Turnover was a strong 149.35 million shares worth $Au5t335.34 million and rises outnumbered falls by five to four. Attention focused on Robert Holmes a Court’s Bell Resources, up 10c to 500 as 907 M shares worth sAust44.66M were traded. Bought predominantly by offshore investors, the transactions follow the company’s lodgement of a petition in the United States to increase its state in troubled oil giant Texaco from 9.6 per cent to between 10 and 15 per cent. Other resource issues were mixed, with Australian Consolidated Minerals up 38c to 760 and Western Mining up 6c to 764 following a rise in nickel prices in London overnight. However, CRA dropped 25c to 1020 and Pancontinental 30c to 355. A slight rise in bullion overnight saw more interest directed towards gold issues, and both Renison and Emperor improved 30c to 1090 and 780 respectively. Giant Resources put on 25c to 300. Industrials were also mixed. FAI stood out, rising 50c to 670 on speculation it would sell its 18 per cent stake in Pioneer Concrete.
