Mediator shortage in Chch
Mediators from Auckland and Wellington, may be called in to hear personal grievance claims by redundant staff at the Feltex Woven Carpets factory. A shortage of 'Christchurch industrial' mediators threatens to delay the hearing of claims until after the 90 workers are laid off. • Mr Andy Lea, secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Woollen J Mill Workers’ Union, said last evening that he had asked for mediators from Auckland and Wellington to help clear the backlog of hearings. At present only three of the 23 hearings set down have been heard because Christchurch has no mediators available until the end of the month. ' Mr Lea said it was the company as well as the workers that were keen to have the claims heard. Feltex announced recently it would lay off 90 people, at its Riccarton factory. Seventy-three of those are members of the Woollen Mills Workers’ Union.
