Wimbledon
Sir,—Reuter’s report from London on the Wimbledon women’s singles final (July 6) told us that “Martina Navratilova, mercilessly hounded by the 18-year-old Steffi Graf for the last six months, finally turned on her tormentor with a vengeful savagery in her own backyard.” I question the use of such language. One of the strong impressions I received from the thrilling telecasts was that the behaviour of women players, particularly in the disputing of
linesmen’s and umpires’ decisions, was more mature and sporting than that of men players. The congratulations and commiserations of the women at the end of matches and the comments in post-match interviews by Navratilova and others were generous and sincere. Reuter’s report said that Steffi “remained as gracious in defeat as she had been charming in victory throughout her 45-match winning run.” If we want our own young players to have a model, they might find one more easily among the women champions than among the men. — Yours, etc., NEAL BUCHANAN.
