Ban 2,4,5-T petition
PA Wellington A 12,000-signature petition calling for a ban on the manufacture and use of 2,4,5-T has been presented to the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman, * outside Parliament. . A Wainuiomata dioxon action group member, Alison White, said many people in New Zealand suffered from chronic low-level chemical poisoning caused by agricultural spraying. Mr Colman said the
petition would be presented to the House before going to a Government petition committee. New Zealand is the only country that manufactures 2,4,5-T. Because of its high dioxin content it is either banned or not used in many other countries. A Ministerial committee of inquiry last year concluded there was no proof that the continuing manufacture of 2,4,5-T at the Ivon Watkins-Dow plant in New Plymouth posed a public health hazard.
