Gold price helps Aust.

NZPA Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed firm in mixed trading yesterday. A resumption of buying in selected industrial stocks and firmer mining issues led the market up, brokers said. A further increase in gold prices overnight (early yesterday morning, N.Z. time) was enough to give the market a good start. Brokers said there was a feeling that the selling of the last few sessions had been overdone.

At the close the all-ordin-aries index was 3.3 points higher at 1742.9. National turnover was a high 154 million shares, worth sAust32oM, with falls outnumbering rises six to five. Brokers said the expiry of June series options in stocks such as Western Mining (WMC), CSR, and Elders IXL, led to high turnover in these stocks.

A total of 9.6 M WMC shares worth S43M were exchanged and on-market the stock added 6c to 576.

Elders IXL rose 6c to 460 on turnover of 8.07 M, CSR lost 3c to 405 on turnover of 5.4 M and CRA dropped 26c to 850 after reaching 8.90 on turnover of 3.9 M.

Turnover in Bonds Coats Patons, the take-over target, continued to be strong after the news that a Linter-Entrad joint venture had assembled 10.9 per cent of the company’s capital. A further 700,000 shares traded at an unchanged 620. Dominguez Barry Samuel Montagu, a broker, sold 5.2 M Sunshine Australia shares at 280 in special Sale, understood to have been bought by Wormaid.

Boral firmed 15c to 495, TNT 7c to 435 and FAI 8c to 510. News Corporation lost 20c to 1830 and Brambles 10c to 890. On the mining boards Kidston gained 30c to 630 and Poseidon 15c to 475, but Ampol Exploration dropped 24c to 500. Closing
