Young Nationals
Sir,—lf Susan Taylor (June 22) requires a more clear explanation regarding Young Nationals’ employment policy, I shall try again. First, we must understand that the present social welfare system is sending out the wrong signals — signals that doing nothing is financially rewarding; in fact, more rewarding than some forms of honest employment. Therefore, we must destroy this pattern for the sake of our future economy. In its place, people must be en-
couraged to become self-reliant, not State-reliant. This requires a free-market economy to reward individual effort, leading to greater productivity and low unemployment. As for Ms Taylor’s socialistic ideals, the human factors would render , them unworkable. New Zealand requires all its people up and working, for their own needs, not sortie dragging back the rest — Yours, etc., MURRAY SMITH, Chairman Canterbury-Westiand>..
