Selling fees
Sir,—The Real Estate feature of June 10 was a fine example of double-think. It claims that buyers and sellers have never been better served, because of a record number of salespeople, admitting that there are so many that some may not make a living, and that there is a shortage of houses available for them to sell. About 1980, estate agents raised fees as a percentage of selling price, claiming that inflation made this necessary. This neglected the fact that fees would rise automatically along with property prices. Buyers and sellers would be better served by a smaller number of salespeople, charging that earlier percentage fee. — Yours, etc., JIM McCAHON. Parnassus, June 13, 1987.
