Truancy penalty mooted
PA Auckland The Social Welfare Department should withhold benefits from parents whose children fail to attend school, says New Zealand’s School Committees Association. Anxiety about the deteriorating behaviour of many primary, intermediate and secondary pupils was reflected in half the
remits at its recent conference being aimed at the issue, said the Auckland School Committees Association president, Mr Joseph Peart. The conference called for stricter controls on violent and pornographic videos by . censorshp authorities. The association wanted teachers to have more support from social wel-
fare workers to cope with the increase in pupils’ social problems they faced in the classroom, he said. The conference also passed a remit calling for the Government to halt its new mainstreaming of pupils with special needs into the State school system until proper resources were available.
