Jail suicide attempt
PA Auckland A young Otara woman is critically r ill in Mlddlemore Hospital after being found last evening hanging in a cell at the Otahuhu Police Station. The police said that the woman, aged 18, was found on a routine inspection by watchhouse staff gt 6.20 p.m. She was unconscious and hanging by the neck by a sheet tied to the cell door. The police gave mouth-
to-mouth and cardio-pul-monary resuscitation. A pulse was detected after 45 minutes. Senior-Sergeant Jeff Holloway said the woman was in the cells awaiting a surety for bail. She had been charged with two fraud-related matters, and had been in the cell since 3 p.m. She had been checked within the half-hour before being found hanging and had seemed all right.
