Nelson winner of Romney award
A Nelson farmer, Mr Graham Sutton, is the 1987 Donaghys Romney Farmer of the Year. Mr Sutton, who farms 800 ha at Tophouse, near St Arnaud, headed off two other finalists to win the award.
A field day will be held on his property at 10.30 a.m. next Wednesday, May 20: The award, which alternates annually between the North and South Islands, recognises outstanding achievement by
a commercial sheep farmer. The winner has to be an allrounder of the highest quality in all aspects of farming and business management.
He is judged on the quality of his stock and pastures; managerial efficiency, enterprise and initiative; financial performance of his farming operation; his programme to improve production and develop his land; general appearance and layout of his farm. Each of the New Zealand Romney Sheep Breeders’ Association’s three South island clubs (or regions) — North South Island (Nelson, Marlborough and North Canterbury), Canterbury, and Southern Provinces (Otago and Southland) — ran its own competition,
with the winners going on to contest the national final.
A panel of judges, consisting of a Romney stud breeder, a commercial Romney farmer, and representatives from the M.A.F. and the stock and station industry, visited each farm and discussed its operation with the farmer.
The competition is aimed solely at commercial sheep farmers and stud breeders are not allowed to enter. The only requirement is that entrants should have used registered Romney rams for five years over at least 65 per cent of their ewe flock.
Something like 15,000 New Zealand sheep farmers have flocks based on Romneys or their derivatives.
