Pro-Libyan group condemns action
NZPA-AAP Melbourne A pro-Libyan group has condemned yesterday’s military coup in Fiji. Mr Robert Pash, spokesman for the Libyan Arab Culture Bureau and the Australian Peoples’ Congress, told AAP the coup put in doubt hopes for Fiji after the nation’s elections about a month ago.
“We were hopeful with the elections in Fiji that it would bring about a chance of an independent and progressive Government which would help the people not only of Fiji
but the whole Pacific,” he said. “We do not know whether it has been inspired by the Americans or other imperialist Powers who have interests in the region.” Libya was “very strongly supportive of the democratically elected legitimate Government of Fiji.” He said it was thought Fiji would follow the course of Vanuatu as “an independent non-aligned” nation which was in the best interests of the Pacific region.
