Plans for rugby match remain

PA Hamilton Plans for a Fijian rugby team to play Argentina in Hamilton later this month have not been affected by yesterday’s coup, the New Zealand Rugby Union said.

“It is the first we have heard of it and as far as we are concerned the tournament is going ahead,” an official said. The Fijian team was not due to leave Fiji until tomorrow but the union has not been notified that it intended to cancel the match. No plans had been made to increase security if the May 23 match went ahead, the

official said. The chairman of the' Waikato Rugby Union, Mr Reg Dow, said he would “take things as they come.” Tickets had been almost sold out for the match and officials were not expecting to cancel. “If they come we will play them,” he said. It was far too early to say whether extra security would be needed as no details had come from Fiji about the coup. The Hamilton police said it was too early for them to make a decision on the match’s security level.
