Obituary

Mr James Craig

Mr James (Jim) Craig, who was on the West Coast District Committee for 25 years and an executive member of the New Zealand Racing Conference for 11 years, died in Westport on Monday. He was aged 77. Mr Craig continued a family tradition in racing, his family having been members of the Westport Jockey Club for 106 years. The Craig family has held presidency of the club for at least a third of that time, while Mr Craig’s father was made a life member of the Auckland Trotting Club back in 1939.

Mr Craig’s paternal grandfather was an origi-

nal member of the club, followed by his son, and latterly Mr Craig who enjoyed many years of service for the club. Mr Craig’s son, John, is a member of the Auckland Racing Club. A former taxi and bus driver, Mr Craig was a member of the Rotary Club in Westport for 26 years after World War II and also held office as president. A past chairman of the Buller Development Company, Mr Craig managed a branch of Baillie, Neville and Co., a farm machinery and farming supplies firm, from 1960 until his retirement 10 years ago.
