Sapling Stakes on second day

The $20,000 N.Z. Sapling Stakes and R. A. Burnett Memorial will this year be run on the second day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Monday, June 2.

“The committee has for some time been considering returning to Monday for the Sapling Stakes,” said the club’s secretary, Mr Trevor Robertson. “This will enable those involved in sport on Saturday and also shopping on that day to see the club’s classic,” he said.

The race had been run on the second day of the .meeting many years ago,

but it was changed to the first day so that the young horses could have the best conditions possible when the old grass track was often affected by rain in the winter, said Mr Robertson. The stake for the mobile start 2400 m event has been increased by $2500 over 1986.

The feature event on the first day of the meeting will be the Queen’s Birthday Stakes. This event, run over 2400 m from a standing start, is for three-year-olds and this year it will carry a stake of $BOOO, an increase of $lOOO.
