Out on a limb

Branches are the theme of an exhibition which opened at Manawa Art, at 87 Cashel Street, this week.

The exhibition, a series of stretched canvases by William Dunning, will be showing until Saturday, May 23. In every painting the theme of the branch is the subject matter, but “this subject matter is

only the convenient image which allows me to paint,” says Dunning. Oil paint mixed with heated wax, linseed oil, varnish and turps were used for the paintings. The wax means he can achieve a variety of textural effects, says Dunning. The artist was born in Christchurch and studied at the University of Can-

terbury. He then went to the Victoria College for the Arts in Melbourne and gained a post-graduate diploma with distinction in painting. Manawa Art is open from Tuesday to Thursday from midday to 5 p.m., Friday midday to 9 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday except by appointment.
