South Africa

Sir, —The value of Olympic Games and world championships in tennis, rugby, cricket, yachting, etc., is based on the ideal and tradition that they must be open to all comers, irrespective of race, colour, creed or political status. Critics could find, as I have, that a large section of white South Africans regard the Boer War, apartheid system and exclusion of blacks in sports representation as regrettable mistakes. South African participation in world championships must depend on opportunity for all their citizens to compete; but, when we consider other African countries with black governments, do we really want a black government in South Africa under present circumstances? Television and visitors like Mr Tambo, who tries to justify A.N.C. violence and appeals for our support, give us one side. Why can we not hear the other side? Countries that use boycotts against others that have sporting contacts with South Africa should not be pandered to. They must abide by such decisions. — Yours, etc., TED MULCOCK. April 20, 1987.
