Two drift for months in boat

NZPA-AAP Port Moresby Two young Papua New Guineans have survived two months adrift in an open 6m dinghy, but five of their companions perished. Jerry Yoyoli, aged 20, and Louis Vaolusu, aged 18, and their five friends left Maromon, in the Lehir Islands, two months ago, headed for Kavieng, about 220 km north-west But their ourboard motor broke down, the boat was not seen again, and relatives believed that the seven were dead. The P.N.G. maritime search and rescue co-or-dinator, Edi Kapigeno, said yesterday the small boat was sighted on Wednesday by a Japanese fishing boat near the Santa Cruz Islands, about 2000 km from home, in the far south of the Solomons. When the crew investigated, they found the two survivors lying in the bottom of the boat.

They were suffering badly from exposure, dehydration and starvation.
