New primary school planned
PA Wellington Planning is under way to set up New Zealand’s first Montessori primary school in Wellington next year. The school would cater largely for children attending the city’s Montessori pre-school, which uses the teaching methods developed by the Italian educationist, Mari Montessori., A member of the new school’s organising committee, Mrs Phillipa Fowler, said the biggest hurdle was finding a qualified teacher. The
committee had advertised in, England, and would alto advertise in other countries which run Montessori teacher training programmes. Mrs Fowler said the school would probably be set up in the old Catholic school in The Rigi, Kelbum. It would cater for children from age five to about 10. She said a big demand for places was expected, as it was already impos- - sible to meet the demand for places at the preschool. A second preschool will be established next term.
