Dye appeals against six-month suspension
NZPA-AAP Sydney The former New Zealand jockey, Shane Dye, has been granted a stay of proceedings after his appeal against a sixmonth suspension handed out to him by Australian Jockey Club stewards on Tuesday. Dye, suspended until October 21 on an improper riding charge in last Saturday’s $750,000 AJ.C. Derby (2400 m at Randwick was cleared for the AJ.C. Oaks meeting at Randwick on Wednesday where he had eight rides. The stewards found Dye guilty of improper riding on Tuesday when they resumed an inquiry adjourned from Saturday. On being advised of his suspension, Dye immediately lodged an appeal with the AJ.C. and was granted a stay of proceedings allowing him to ride until the appeal is heard at a date to be set Stewards claimed that Dye had established that the Derby favourite, Myocard, was behind him before allowing his mount Imprimatur to shift out and hamper Balciano, taking that horse’s running and allowing Myocard to take an advantageous rails run. Myocard won the Derby by five lengths from the New Zealand gallioper, My Precocious Lad, with the Australian Derby winner, Joindre, a nose away third. Stewards , had questioned Dye on Saturday over his ride from near the 600 m to the 200 m mark. Myocard got a charmed run from the 600 m when jockey Mark De Montford hugged the rail with the champion colt before the pacemaker, Imprimatur, moved out and inconvenienced Balciano and Bounding Away. The AJ.C.’s chief steward, Mr John Schreck, told Dye he had allowed Imprimatur to shift out sufficiently to allow Myocard to slip through on the inside. "Imprimatur was not handling the ground,” Dye told the stewards. ’ "He can’t handle the track and is hopeless in the wet.” Dye told the stewards that except for looking around, and the stewards’ film clearly showed him looking inside and then outside, there bad been nothing wrong with his ride on Imprimatur. Dye rounded off a successful Sydney autumn carnival with a doubnon Winged Prayer in ’the
