‘Accent on wool’ week in Chch

Two events of interest to woolgrowers will be held in and around Christchurch from May 11 to 17 — the National Woolcrafts Festival at Lincoln College and the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association National Golden Fleece Award in Canterbury Court, Addington Showgrounds. Associated with the National Golden Fleece Award will be a seminar for wool producers featuring the chairman of the International Wool Secretariat, Mr David Asimus; the chairman of the New Zealand Wool Board, Mr Pat Morrison; a scientist from the Wool Research Organisation, Dr Alan Edmunds; and a specialist in genetic engineering from the Department of Immunology, University of Australia, Professor Bede Morris. That programme will begin at 9.30 a.m, on Tuesday, May 12. The fleeces entered in the competition represent the best of New Zealand’s wool industry and will be selected from the prize winners at A. and P. association shows throughout the country. Each fleece is tested and the results incorporated in the judging. They will be exhibited

in Canterbury Court on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 12 and 13 along with associated commercial displays, and sheepbreed representatives. A special feature will be a range of the latest garments in fine wool from the International Wool Secretariat, Paris. These are being brought to New Zealand directly from Paris by the Wool Board.

There will be parades on both days by Pieters Model Agency, and a number of the garments will also be included in the National Woolcrafts Festival “Focus on Fashion” Parade in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The National Wool Crafts Festival is being organised by the Canterbury area of the Spinning, Weaving and Woolcraft Society. The National Golden Fleece Exhibition will be hosted by the Canterbury A and P. Association, on behalf of the Royal Agricultural Society of N.Z. The organising committees are closely co-ordi-nating their activities, and with the support of retailers, plan to use these events as an “Accent on Wool” week.
