Cost rise
There was a slight increase in the cost of “The Press” shopping basket this month. In grocery lines the biggest increases were in essential items such as butter (15 cents), toilet paper (9 cents), toothpaste (17 cents) and cheese (43 cents). Offsetting these rises were falls in the costs of 500 g of Miracle margarine, which cost $1.65 at one supermarket This was 15 cents less than the previous month's price. A can of Wattle’s peaches cost 10 cents less and 900 ml of Sunlight detergent cost $l.Bl, compared with $2.19 last month. Variations in meat prices reflect the effects of the meat being sold by auction.
