‘Dead’ Royal cousin in mental hospital
NZPA-PA London A cousin of the Queen has spent more than 40 years in a mental hospital and has been listed as dead since 1963. Miss Katherine BowesLyon, aged 60, niece of
the Queen Mother, has been in the Royal Earlswood Hospital, Redhill, Surrey, since 1941,, the hospital confirmed. \ Her sister, Nerissa, who died last year, is also said to have spent most of her life in the hospital and is
buried in an unmarked grave. The 1963 edition of “Burke’s Peerage,” the top people’s “Who’s Who,” describes Katherine as having died in 1961 and Nerissa in 1940. A spokesman for the
Royal Earlswood Hospital said: “We can confirm that Katherine BowesLyon has been a resident at this hospital since 1941. “She is severely mentally handicapped but has no physical disabilities.” I
