Australia maintains run

NZPA-AAP Sydney Continued local and overseas demand for leading gold and industrial stocks pushed Australian sharemarkets to record levels yesterday. Gold stocks, which were the driving force behind last week’s record-breaking market, made further strong gains as bullion rose to around 5U5421.50 an ounce in Asia. A record one-day gain on Wall Street on Friday and the prospect of lower domestic interest rates boosted demand for industrial stocks.

National turnover was a heavy 176.9 million shares worth sAust3l4.4 million, with rises outnumbering falls almost two to one.

On the industrials board, investors concentrated on interest rate sensitive stocks such as banks and insurance issues and stocks in the alcohol and tobacco group. Westpac gained 18c to 483, ANZ 14c to 540 and National Australia 12c to 530. FAI put on 20c to 1030 and QBE 50c to 1150.

Resources leader BHP advanced 35c to 1155 and reached a high of’ll6o, North Broken Hill rose 23c to 308,
