Council called to hold levies
The Canterbury United Council should hold its levy increase to constituent councils to 14 per cent or reduce salaries by $32,000, according to the Christchurch City Council.
The council has called on its representatives to the United Council to support this. The United Council’s provisional budget, to be discussed on April 15, sets out a 21.2 per cent in-
crease in its levy from the City Council. Councillors had strongly questioned United Council representatives about the budget last week. Last evening they agreed to request the Minister of Local Government to reappraise the United Council’s role if amalgamation happens. The council was told a reduction of the levy increase to 14 per cent
would mean trimming $55,348 from the budget. An alternative would be to reduce salaries and special services by $32,000 or the equivalent of the new staff the council wanted. Demonstration projects could also be reduced by $15,000. The City Council will advise the United Council of its concern about the proposed levy.
