Candidates in April—N.Z. Party
New Zealand Party candidates for four Canterbury electorates will be announced in early April, said a spokesman for the party’s Canterbury branch, Mr Alan Blackadder, yesterday. The names of the candidates had been confirmed and were awaiting ratification by the New Zealand Party national executive.
The West Coast candidate would be the first to be announced on April 4 as the party’s 1987 election campaign began, Mr Blackadder said.
“It will be a campaign with a difference — one with several innovations,” he said.
The New Zealand Party steering committee met in Wellington last week-end to finalise announcements
of first candidates.
Wellington party officials also met with the steering committee to discuss local developments. “Party news from around the country is positive as past members and candidates are returning to the party and a new group of people, extremely concerned about the state of politics in this country, are becoming involved, determined to provide better government in this country,” a party spokesman said. “There is obviously widespread disillusionment with Labour and concern at the direction the country is taking. We have yet to find anyone who believes National can provide the quality of Government this country deserves,” he said.
