N.Z.H.A. opposes labour moves

PA Wellington The Hotel Association is largely opposed to the Government’s labour-re-form legislation. The bill, if enacted, would create an industrial relations system tilted in favour of trade unions, the association said. New rights and privileges extending to such bodies would give an imbalance which it believed would make for an unwieldy and troublesome system. The association was making submissions on the Labour Relations Bill to Parliament’s Labour Relations Select Committee. It also asked the committee if it would be possible to define larger hotels, with 50 or more bedrooms, as an essential service. Workers would then have to give 14 days notice of any proposed strike. The Hotel Association’s chief executive, Mr Tom Sheehy, said the services would be to cover accommodation, meals and security for house guests during strikes.
