Elderly at home

Sir, —I support the letter of Eve Stonehouse (March 11). Those who voted for social security in 1938 and have paid tax all their lives have certainly benefited succeeding generations. Most of us have served through other means also. In common with many others, we have also done a lot of unpaid social work. I feel that a country which ceases to feel an obligation towards caring for its senior citizens, when age eventually causes infirmity, has not much to boast about. The constant increase in the price of electricity, and the telephone, are a major disadvantage to the older people and also to younger, infirm people. Television, while by no means a necessity, means a lot to house-bound people. — Yours, etc.,

G. M. SHANKS. March 12, 1987.
