Elderly at home

Sir, —Commenting on the Government’s decision to introduce and fund a pilot scheme in Auckland for home care of the elderly, Eve Stonehouse (March 11) states: “The battle to keep the elderly in their own homes was fought and finally lost in Christchurch in August, 1975.” The Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council has over many years operated a support service to meet the researched needs of Christchurch elderly so that they can retain independence at home. There has been a very close liaison with the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association which also provides a homehelp service in conjunction with Health Care. The Canterbury Hospital Board recognises and supports this council’s work and appreciates that it takes some pressure off health services. The council believes that in Christchurch the combined efforts of the agencies mentioned, plus those of church and other groups, are meeting present needs. We were surprised, therefore, that the Government apparently made no inquiry here before launching its Auckland scheme. — Yours, etc., C. GRAHAM RILEY, Chairman. March 11, 1987.
