Interest keen, standards high at Amuri Show

About 1500 people took advantage of a warm, sunny day on Saturday and attended the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral’s show at the Rotherham showgrounds. Gate-takings at $1350 were up on last year’s total of $l2OO. Amuri is the first of the autumn shows on the North Canterbury agricultural and pastoral show circuit.

Entries this year were slightly down, but at more than 2000, interest was still keen and standards remained high.

A display of vintage tractors dating back to 1918 attracted strong interest from the public especially during a circuit of the main ring. Other stands to catch the eye were those showing honey production and outdoor activites offered in the HanmerSprings, Waiau-Culverden-Rotherham area.. A shearing contest attracted 32 competitors in the four sections with Graham Twose, of Waikari, winning' the Le Pine Trophy for champion shearer and Garth Keay, also of Waikari, winning the Popplewell Cup for best finished sheep in a pen.
