Salvaged wood for new desks

PA Wellington Pupils at a Rarotonga school have 'used wood 'salvaged from cyclonewrecked classrooms to rebuild their own desks, the “Cook Islands News” reports. Titikavika College was badly battered when Cyclone Sally hit the Cook Islands last month, and about 76 desks were damaged.

With help from the Education Department, pupils and teachers made 42 new tables, catering for about 100 students, from salvaged wood.

Resourcefulness has characterised the islanders* approach to cleaning up after the cyclone. Whole villages have been assigned to work on the clean-up, and Government servents were given leave to help
