America’s Cup

5 Sir,—The undesirable happenings in various fields of sport make one wonder what has happened to the precious name of ln the golden era of sport, when the modem Olympics began, it was then said by the founder, Baron de Coubfrtin, “there is honour in competing.” What a paradox today on these immortal words. In particular, I wish to focus on the Spate of accusations which flowed from the Stars and Stripes tamp about New Zealand’s sporting honour in Perth. After a long spell from sports writing, I want [o raise my pen again, in protest. For deeply embedded in the annals of New Zealand’s participation in world competition is an untarnished reputation for sportsmanship. "Humble in victory, gracious in defeat” has been our hallmark. “Novice Chris” beat a very experienced Conner three times and won the contest in all other respects, especially sportsmanship.— Yours, etc., L JOHN FLOYD.
