Myxomatosis

.. Sir,—The item on February 20, “Myx. debate must go. on,” reporting a meeting of the Agricultural Pests Destruction Council, deserves thanks of both farmers and animal lovers. May I raise a couple of very relevant points, seemingly missed by Mr Ged Foley, chairman of the council. First, a world authority on both rabbits and myxomatosis, R. M. Lockley, who has published scientific papers on the disease, doubts if it will be effective in this country. Second, in France, the disease killed 35 per cent of domestic rabbits, a consideration which should cause grave concern in this country to such groups as rabbit farmers, operators of laboratories add pet rabbit owners: To complete the French picture, I should add that it only killed 45 per cent of wild rabbits.—Yours etc., JAMES J. READ. £ Wellington, binary 21, 1987. .
