Inland Revenue phones jamming

The telephone operators at the Inland Revenue Department in Christchurch are finding life taxing at present — the telephone lines to the department have been jamming because of the number of calls. The District Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mr Neale McPherson, said there had been an average of 3Ht calls a day for several months.

A new telephone system, which will be able to cope with an increase in calls by means of a waiting system, will be installed in about a month.

Instead of stacking calls, the present system overloads. It was installed two years ago but the extra work-load created by GST and new taxation laws has sharply increased the number of calls.

While the department apologised for the delays, a spokesman said, callers should not give up trying. “The message is not to panic — you will get through eventually.”
