Take-over puts jobs in doubt
PA New Plymouth About 400 Taranaki Farmers’ employees have their jobs in the balance after the announcement on Tuesday of a planned take-over of the firm’s stock and station outlets by the Australian-based agricultural company, Elders Pastoral, Ltd. Elders plans a big reshuffle of Farmers and says it will employ only enough staff to ensure efficiency in the region. It will concentrate its efforts in the six
Taranaki centres of New Plymouth, Opunake, Hawera, Stratford, Inglewood, and Waitara. It will retain Farmers’ deer-selling complex at Waverley. About 100 people are now employed in those centres, but only three permanent appointments have been announced by Elders so far. Among those yet to be told of their possible future is Farmers’ general manager, Mr Derek Evennett, of New Plymouth.
