Marina group to hold public meeting
A Kaikoura marina steering committed may be formed at a public meeting in Kaikoura on April 14.
This was reported to the Kaikoura County Council after it had been told that the Marlborough Harbour Board had advised that a grant had been declined for a safe harbour feasibility study. It was suggested that any future application might have a better chance of success if it had local input. The Kaiapoi District Promotions Association has taken the project "on board” and will be calling a public meeting with a view to forming a steering committee. It is intended that representatives of local authorities, Government agencies, and marina users will attend the meeting. Any future activity will probably depend on the outcome of that meeting,
which it is hoped will lead to some progress on the study.
The chairman, Mr Percy Acton-Adams, thanked the promotions association for taking the matter up. No camping To overcome a problem of “gypsy caravans” and others camping along the Kaikoura ' township foreshore and Harmer’s Beach, the council adopted a recommendation to erect no camping signs in those areas. It is intended also that the areas will be more stringently policed. A management plan was reported to be nearing completion for the South Bay reserve and that it would probably be advertised next month. Nodding thistle A consignment of nodding thistle weevils from the Strathailen County had been released in the Inland Road area and thleir progress would be
monitored regularly, the noxious plants officer, Mr Chapman, reported.
Once the weevils had become established in these sites it was intended that some would be removed and introduced to other areas. Graffiti
The Kaikoura District Promotion Association has asked the council to remove or cover the graffiti on the walls of the public toilets. The association will be informed that full upgrading is planned for the coming financial year. Building permits Fourteen permits were issued for building work amounting to $261,850 for December and January compared with 10 permits and $298,015 for the comparative period for the previous year. - The permits included three for new dwellings. The progressive value for lhe year is $1,700,850 ($1097,269 for last yetf).
