Charity match Wyllie’s last

The legendary Canterbury rugby coach, Alex Wyllie, will make his last appearance for the team at a charity cricket match in Rangiora this weekend.

The match between the Canterbury rugby team and a Canterbury Promotion Council XI will be. held on Sunday, March 1, at Dudley Park, starting at noon.

It was postponed from February 15 because of a rain-soaked ground.

The 40-over match will also be a last appearance for the former Canterbury captain, Don Hayes, and the first outing for the new coach, Doug Bruce. Among the Promotion

Council team’s ranks will be Brian Hastings, assistant manager of “The Press,” Martin Hadlee, two Rangiora District councillors and Chris Doig, of the Arts Centre, as captain. The match is expected to be keenly contested, since the council took the first win in 1985 and the rugby team recovered from losing the Ranfurly Shield to even the score last year. Admission is free but, a collection will be taken at the ground for the Oxford Fire Relief Fund and the Cholmondeley Children’s Home. Additional funds will come from various' produce and souvenir stalls.
