Nuclear stance

Sir, —My letter of February 11, in which I astonished R. L. Pluck and dismayed Howard Pilgram, was intended to try to wake New Zealanders, including the Labour Government, from their complacency regarding defence and our drift away from the United States. Whether we like it or not, our future is very much tied to the United States and in the past we could stand up and be proudly counted as one of its trusted allies instead of now sitting disgracefully on the sideline. The vast expansion of the Russian navy in the Indian and Pacific oceans must ultimately threaten our well-being and only the United States can counter that threat. Why is Russia spending such vast sums on its army, navy and air force if world domination is not its ultimate aim? — Yours, etc., A. R. EVANS, Pareora Gorge. February 21, 1987.
