New rifle

Sir, —The Labour Government has sold our armed forces down the river. As if the military had not suffered enough as a result of the A.N.Z.U.S. debacle, the Government has now announced that the armed forces will be issued with the Australian-made Steyr-AUG rifle at a cost of S37M, or slightly over $2OOO a rifle. The army’s choice was the Colt Ml 6 A2 which could have been supplied at around $lOOO a rifle. The Ml 6 Als already in service could be modified to bring them up to the A2 specifications and no retraining would be necessary. In accordance with recent Labour Government policy on defence spending, a New Zealand company offered to supply a suitable rifle to the Armed Forces. This offer was rejected. This venture would have provided a much-needed boost for local industry, with no depletion of overseas funds, at a project cost of about half the price of the Steyr-AUG. — Yours, etc., R. M. WOODS. Rangiora, February 19, 1987.
