Coin hoard discovered

By ROBIN CHARTERIS in London Auctioneers called to clear a small terrace house in Lincoln made an astonishing discovery — a 2.5 tonne hoard of old coins that later fetched £35,000 ($98,000). It took eight people a week to count the money, which had belonged to Mr Walter Smith, who had died, aged 81, shortly before. The coins, ranging from gold sovereigns and half-

sovereigns to modem pennies, were in cupboards, linen chests and boxes throughout the house, which was still equipped with gas lamps. Many of the coins were pre-1947 and. contained silver with a bullion value six to 10 times their face value. The auctioneers said little was known of the bachelor owner, except that he liked fishing and gambling. He left his estate to local charities.
