New incinerator at Scott Base working
PA Wellington A further milestone in the rebuilding of the New Zealand Antarctic station, Scott Base, was reached last week with the commissioning of a new pollu-tion-free incinerator. It was touch and go whether the installation of the incinerator could be completed before the end of the summer as the incinerator itself did not reach Antarctica until February 9 on board the supply ship Greenwave. The building to house the incinerator had been erected earlier in the season by New Zealand Army engineers. The design of the incin-
erator is unique because of the need for superior insulation from the extreme cold and the ability to work in high winds. Working temperatures of 750 deg. ensure that clean air requirements are met and enables the destruction of waste plastic, cardboard, and garbage without fear of pollution. There are now three of these units in Antarctica, two at Australian bases and the latest at Scott base. The incinerator replaces an older model which had a limited capacity and was unsuitable for destruction of plastics and some other materials.
