Police weapon review
The type of weapons used and the nature of armed offenders squad exercises are being reviewed after a Christchurch policeman was injured when a firearm discharged near his hand during a simulated hostage release. The policeman suffered burns to the back of his hand when a blank car-
tridge was fired as officers moved in to “free” a hostage in the exercise last week. He required hospital treatment but was not admitted. The acting district commander, Chief Superintendent Ross McLennan, said that steps were being taken to ensure that it did not happen again.
