Crowe scores second 100 against W. Indies

By

DAVID LEGGAT

NZPA sports reporter

Martin Crowe became the fourth New Zealand cricketer to score two test centuries against the West Indies when he made 119 at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, yesterday.

His first came at Georgetown, Guyana, in

the second test of New Zealand’s tour two years ago. In that innings, Crowe, aged 24, achieved his best test score, 188, which he subsequently equalled against Australia at Brisbane later that year.

Fourteen test centuries had been scored by New Zealand batsmen against the West Indies before yesterday, with two each from Bevan Congdon, both in the Caribbean on the 1971-72 tour, Brian Hastings, at Christchurch in 1968-69 and at Barbados three years later; and by the present New Zealand cricket manager, Glenn Turner, who made double centuries at Kingston, Jamaica and

Georgetown on the 197172 tour.

Yesterday was a day of double celebration for the Crowe family. The last batsman from any country to score a century against the West Indies was Martin's brother, Jeff, with 112 at Kingston in 1985. John Wright’s was the ninety-eighth test century scored for New Zealand. Both batsmen are now 100 behind the New Zealand record of seven, held jointly by Turner and Congdon. They now share second place on the order of merit with Geoff Howarth, and the two John Reids.
