Merchant seeks fish overseas
PA Hamilton Fish and chip eaters could soon be munching a yet-undisclosed South American fish as high prices force a Waikato merchant to shop overseas.
Vela Seafoods, Ltd, is organising a trial shipment of 30 to 40 tonnes of a fish similiar to hoki which it hopes will arrive within six weeks.
The company’s owner, Mr Philip Vela, said, ‘‘We shouldn’t have to import it but it is cheaper.” The imported fish would be competitive with frozen and fresh species sold at present.
The South American fish was a threat to the New Zealand industry because of cheaper labour costs and size of the resource.
The high rate of exchange of New Zealand dollars for American dollars, used to buy the fish, helped the importer, Mr Vela said.
