NZPA-Reuter Manila

The Philippines Defence Minister, Rafael Ileto, yesterday denied newspaper reports that the deposed President, Ferdinand Marcos, planned to return and seize power as the country celebrated the first anniversary of his fall on February 25. Manila newspapers said about 2000 soldiers loyal to Mr Marcos had been ordered to prepare to take over the Government of President Corazon Aquino after the former President, arrived in Ilocos Norte, his home province in the northern Philippines.

The Armed Forces deputy chief, Major-Gen-eral Eduardo Ermita, dismissed the rumours but said soldiers had been placed on full alert, “because we cannot leave anything to chance.” Mrs Aquino, aged 53, has survived three military attempts to overthrow her Government
