Option for car owners
PA Timaru The previous owners of five second-hand Japanese sports cars seized by the Customs Department in Timaru do have some redress, the department says.
The cars were among 16 impounded by Customs last month out of a shipment of 22. Eleven were still under investigation, and six were released to their owners. The Christchurch collector of customs, Mr Ray Allison, confirmed that the five cars had been seized, which means that Customs assumes ownership.
However, the department in Timaru said, the previous owner did have redress.
He or she could dispute the forfeiture in court, or repurchase the goods from the Government.
