Villa Maria judged top N.Z. winemaker
PA Auckland Villa Maria estate has been judged New Zealand Winemaker of the Year by the Australian-based International Wine Academy.
The award, the first of its kind, was made in Auckland yesterday by the academy president, Mr Alan Young.
It follows a series of judgings in New Zealand and Australia of each country’s wines by both industry professionals and consumers.
Villa Maria’s wines received the second
highest points total of any wine company in either country. An Australian producer was top on points.
New Zealand companies were the professionals’ choice in nine of the 11 white wine classes.
Mr Young said that when he came to New Zealand for the first time some years ago he was unimpressed with the wines. Three years ago, however, he announced New Zealand made the world’s best affordable and true white wines.
“These results show that it has taken a long
time for people to realise that New Zealand makes better wine than Australia,” he said.
Mr Young singled out a Robard and Butler Rhine Riesling as “the best in the world”.
The winning white wines, in the view of the professional judges, were: Gewurztraminer, Villa Maria; Chenin, Collard Steen 85; Semilion, Deßedcliffe 85; Sauvignon, Villa Maria 84; Fume Blanc, Corbans 85; Semillon blends, Montana 85; Chardonnay, Selaks 85; Sparkling, Montana brut
