Second Cook Strait cable?

PA Wellington The Ministry of Energy’s Electricity Division is investigating the feasibility of a second high-voltage direct current transmission link across Cook Strait The Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, said that adding to the 20-year-old system would improve use of present South Island hydro generation and provide opportunities for development of further schemes. “This could result in more economic operating costs and stable electricity prices for consumers in both islands,” he said. Previous studies revealed the advantages of some form of interisland transmission expansion, he said.

Studies on the new link would include deciding the best sites for terminal stations, overhead line corridors and submarine cable routes. 'Mr Tizard said the new Electricity Corporation would make sure discussions were held with relevant regional authorities when specific options for the direct current link had been clarified.
