Nine Canterbury orienteers do well in south
Nine Canterbury orienteers travelled to Invercargill at the week-end for the Southland orienteering championships and all achieved excellent results. . Trevor Hoey in the men’s S grade was second bean experienced Swedish orienteer. Per Gustafsson. In the women's open grade, Canterbury orienteers dominated With Chrissie Williams first and Jo Guest a close second. George Elliott, M3SA, had an exceptionally good run for first place, with Nigel King from Timaru 10 minutes behind him in second place. In the M4OA grade Kevin McGlinchy, also of Timaru, maintained his recent form and was well ahead of the next competitor. Jenni Adams, last year's national champion in the Wl5 grade, has moved up a grade to Wl7, and still managed a win. In the W2IB Katrina Wilke was first and Sue King (Timaru) was second. The event was held on Saturday on the wind-blown hills at Omaui, near Bluff, in overcast conditions. The gorse and blackberry were prolific and slowed the runners down, so winning times were not as fast as > expected. On Sunday an event was heid in the pine forest at Pebbly Hills near Hedgehope, and again the Canterbury team did well in terrain that required very careful navigation. Abbreviations used in the
